Am I covered?

Covered by most extended health plans

OHIP does not cover private therapy. Most work and school plans do.

Insurance. When it comes to therapy costs in Ontario, sessions with a Registered Social Worker (RSW) are covered by most extended health plans. OHIP does not cover private therapy. You pay after each session and submit the receipt we provide for reimbursement. Read the insurance guide

Direct billing. We don't bill insurers directly, and here's what that means in practice: you pay after each session, we issue a detailed RSW receipt immediately, and most clients submit through their insurer's app in under two minutes. Reimbursement typically lands within days. Every plan is different, so we keep the paperwork exact and let your insurer do the rest.

Cancellation. 24 hours' notice required. Full session fee charged for late cancellations and no-shows.

Does OHIP cover therapy in Ontario?

The clear answer

OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy with a Registered Social Worker or a private psychotherapist. It was not designed for private outpatient mental health care.

Here is what OHIP does cover in Ontario:

Program
What it is
Wait
Psychiatrist (OHIP-billed)
Medical doctors who can prescribe and diagnose. Primarily medication management and assessment, not ongoing talk therapy.
Generally starts at 1 year; can stretch up to 2 years
Hospital outpatient programs
Structured therapy delivered through hospital mental health departments (e.g., day programs, CBT groups).
Waitlists typical
Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP)
A publicly funded CBT program for anxiety and depression, offered online or by phone through Ontario Health. Availability varies by region.
Waitlists vary by region

For most people asking this question, the real answer is this: your extended health plan probably covers private psychotherapy even when OHIP does not. Most workplace and school benefit plans include coverage for sessions with a Registered Social Worker (RSW). That is who Inner Room's therapists are.

Does ODSP cover therapy?

ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) is a form of Ontario disability support. It does not usually fund private psychotherapy, because the expectation is that mental health services are provided through hospitals and community health care organizations.

  • Some ODSP recipients are also enrolled in group insurance through a workplace or family plan. If so, that plan may cover RSW sessions.
  • If cost is a real barrier, there are lower-cost routes: community mental health agencies, sliding-scale practices, and Ontario Works-connected referrals. Ask us during the consultation and we will help you identify what fits your situation.

A note on Ontario Works (OW): Like ODSP, OW does not fund private therapy. Referrals to community mental health organizations (typically free or low-cost) are the standard path. The difference: ODSP is for long-term disability, while OW is for any form of unemployment.

Most extended health plans cover you even when OHIP doesn't.

Named insurers

Does my plan cover therapy?

Common insurers in Ontario, explained plainly.

Does Sun Life cover therapy in Ontario?
Yes, most Sun Life plans include coverage for MSW RSW psychotherapy. The specifics depend on your individual plan: the annual limit, whether reimbursement is 80% or 100%, whether a referral is needed. A quick call to Sun Life confirms all of it in minutes. When you call, ask specifically: "Does my plan cover MSW RSW psychotherapy, and what is my annual limit?"
Does Manulife cover therapy?
Most Manulife plans cover MSW RSW sessions. Coverage limits vary by plan, and some plans reimburse 80% while others cover 100%. The fastest way to find out where you stand is to call Manulife directly or check with your HR department. Ask for your mental health benefit limit and whether MSW RSW is an accepted credential.
Does Blue Cross cover therapy in Ontario?
Yes, typically. Blue Cross plans usually include coverage for MSW RSW and other mental health practitioners. The key is confirming that the credential your plan accepts matches your therapist's designation. Inner Room's therapists are all MSW RSWs, which is the most commonly covered designation across Blue Cross plans in Ontario.
Does GreenShield cover therapy?
Yes. GreenShield plans commonly include coverage for MSW RSW psychotherapy. As with other insurers, the specifics depend on your plan: the annual limit, the reimbursement percentage, and whether a referral applies. Call GreenShield or check your plan details to confirm your mental health benefit. Inner Room's therapists are all MSW RSWs.
Are you registered with Telus Health?
Yes. Inner Room is registered with TELUS Health, which administers employee benefit plans for many Canadian employers. If your benefits are with TELUS Health, sessions with our Registered Social Workers are claimable under your plan's mental health benefit, subject to your plan's specific limits.
Is online therapy covered the same as in-person?
For most Ontario extended health plans now, yes. Virtual therapy Ontario sessions are treated the same as in-person since coverage policies updated post-COVID. Your receipt and reimbursement process are identical whether you meet your therapist in person or over video.
Can I get therapy for free in Ontario?
In some cases, yes. If your employer offers an EFAP (Employee and Family Assistance Program), you likely have access to a small number of free sessions, usually 3 to 8, before any cost kicks in. Check with your HR department first. Students at Ontario universities often have access to free on-campus counselling through their institution. Community mental health organizations also offer free or sliding-scale services based on income, though these usually come with waitlists of several months. If cost is a real barrier for you, bring it up directly during the consultation. There are more options than most people realize, and the right starting point depends on your situation.
What is the 3-month rule for mental health coverage?
Some group insurance plans include a 90-day waiting period before mental health benefits become active. This typically applies if you are a new employee or have just joined a new plan. During that window, your extended health benefits may not yet cover therapy sessions. The best way to find out is to call your insurer and ask specifically when your mental health coverage starts. If you are between jobs or waiting for a plan to kick in, community mental health programs or sliding-scale practices may help bridge the gap in the meantime.
Do I need a referral from a doctor to see a therapist?
Usually no. Most private therapy practices, including Inner Room, don't require a GP referral to book. You can reach out and set up a session directly. Some extended health plans do ask for a referral before they will reimburse, so it's worth checking your plan details. That's a different question from needing one to actually see someone.
Does my therapy receipt need anything specific?
Yes. Your receipt should show: the session date, your therapist's name, their registration number (RSW), the session duration, and the fee paid. Inner Room provides all of this automatically with every session. When you submit to your insurer, that's all they need.

Check your plan

How to check if therapy is covered by your insurance

Three things to do before your first session.

01

Call your insurer (or log into their app)

Ask one specific question: "Does my plan cover sessions with an MSW RSW (Registered Social Worker)?" The phrase "MSW RSW" is important. Some plans list mental health coverage under "psychologist" only, which is a different credential. Inner Room therapists are all Registered Social Workers, which is covered under most Ontario plans, but you want to confirm the exact designation.

02

Find your annual limit and reimbursement rate

Ask: "What is my annual mental health limit, and does the plan reimburse 80% or 100%?" A common configuration is $500–$2,000 per year at 80% reimbursement. Knowing this before you start means no surprises in February.

03

Note what you need to submit

Your Inner Room receipt includes everything your insurer requires: session date, therapist name, registration number (RSW), session duration, and fee paid. You submit it through your insurer's app or portal. Most clients do this in under two minutes.

Provider titles

Therapist titles in Ontario: what they mean

The distinctions that affect your coverage and your care.

Registered Psychotherapist (RP)

Registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. RPs provide therapy but cannot prescribe medication or diagnose. Coverage under extended health plans is common but less universal than for RSWs. Always confirm with your insurer.

Psychologist (C.Psych / Ph.D.)

Registered with the Psychology Registration Authority in Ontario. Psychologists can diagnose and provide therapy. Session rates are typically higher ($200–$350+). Coverage varies. OHIP covers psychologist services only when delivered within a hospital or OHIP-funded program.

Psychiatrist (MD)

A medical doctor who has specialized in psychiatry. Psychiatrists can diagnose, prescribe medication, and are covered by OHIP when billing through OHIP. Most Ontario psychiatrists focus on medication management rather than ongoing talk therapy. Wait times for psychiatrist appointments generally start at one year and can stretch up to two years.

Inner Room therapists are Registered Social Workers, one of the most widely covered designations under Ontario extended health plans. If your plan covers "psychotherapy" or "social work," you are very likely covered.

Your questions

Therapy costs & insurance, answered

Clear answers on fees, coverage, and how to start.

How much does therapy cost in Ontario?Private therapy in Ontario typically costs $120 to $350 per session depending on credentials and format. At Inner Room, individual sessions are $170 to $195, couples sessions are $220, and the student rate is $130. All fees are HST-exempt. See our full therapy cost blog for a breakdown by credential and region.

How much is couples therapy in Ontario?Couples therapy in Ontario typically costs $150 to $350 per session depending on the therapist's credentials and the session format. At Inner Room, couples sessions are $220 for a 50-minute session, with a $310 intake session for new couples. All fees are HST-exempt, and sessions are virtual across Ontario.

Why do therapists charge different rates?Rates reflect experience, specialization, and demand. Our therapists set their own fees within a transparent range. The right question is fit, not just fee.

Is 20 sessions of therapy a lot? There's no right number. Some people resolve a specific issue in 6 to 8 sessions. Deeper patterns, trauma, or long-standing anxiety usually take months of steady work. Twenty sessions over six months is a common arc, not an extreme one.

Is therapy covered by OHIP?No. OHIP covers psychiatrists (medical doctors) and some hospital-based programs, including the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) program, a publicly funded CBT program for anxiety and depression with availability that varies by region. It does not cover private psychotherapy with a Registered Social Worker, psychologist, or registered psychotherapist in private practice. Most extended health plans do cover sessions with a Registered Social Worker. See the insurance blog.

Does ODSP cover therapy?ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) is a form of Ontario disability support. It does not usually fund private psychotherapy, because the expectation is that mental health services are provided through hospitals and community health care organizations. If cost is a barrier, ask in the consultation. There are lower-cost options we can help identify.

Does Ontario Works cover therapy?Like ODSP, Ontario Works (OW) does not fund private therapy. Referrals to community mental health organizations, which are typically free or low-cost, are the standard path. The difference: ODSP is for long-term disability, while OW is for any form of unemployment.

Does UHIP cover therapyNo. UHIP (the University Health Insurance Plan) is the mandatory basic health plan for international students in Ontario, similar to OHIP. It covers hospital and physician services, but not private psychotherapy with a Registered Social Worker, psychologist, or psychotherapist. It does cover psychiatrists, since they are medical doctors. Most Ontario universities also offer a separate extended health plan, such as StudentCare, that does cover mental health practitioners including MSW RSWs, with a per-visit and annual limit that varies by school. Check your student plan. Inner Room's student rate is $130 with any therapist.

Is there free therapy in Ontario?Yes, with trade-offs. OHIP-covered options include hospital outpatient programs and the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy program, but waitlists often run months. Community agencies offer sliding-scale counselling. University students can access campus counselling. Private therapy means no waitlist, your choice of therapist, and continuity of care.

How can I get cheaper therapy in Ontario?A few honest routes: our $130 student rate (any therapist), sliding-scale community clinics, training clinics with supervised interns, and maximizing your insurance reimbursement. Employee assistance programs (EAPs) often include a few sessions before any cost kicks in.

What does therapy fall under for insurance?Therapy typically falls under the mental health or paramedical section of an extended health plan. The relevant credential is usually listed as social worker, psychotherapist, or psychologist. Inner Room therapists are Registered Social Workers (MSW RSW), which is covered under most Ontario group plans, including Sun Life, Manulife, Blue Cross, and GreenShield. We are also registered with TELUS Health. When in doubt, call your insurer and ask which mental health designations are covered under your plan.

Does Sun Life cover therapy with a Registered Social Worker? Most Sun Life plans include coverage for MSW RSW psychotherapy. The specifics depend on your individual plan: the annual limit, the reimbursement percentage, and whether a referral is required. Call Sun Life and ask specifically: does my plan cover MSW RSW psychotherapy, and what is my annual limit?

Does Manulife cover therapy in Ontario? Most Manulife plans cover MSW RSW sessions. Coverage limits and reimbursement rates vary by plan. The fastest way to confirm is to call Manulife or check with your HR department. Ask for your mental health benefit limit and whether MSW RSW is an accepted designation under your plan.

Does GreenShield cover therapy?Yes. GreenShield plans commonly include coverage for MSW RSW psychotherapy. As with other insurers, the specifics depend on your plan: the annual limit, the reimbursement percentage, and whether a referral applies. Call GreenShield or check your plan details to confirm your mental health benefit.

Are you registered with TELUS Health?Yes. Inner Room is registered with TELUS Health, which administers employee benefit plans for many Canadian employers. If your benefits are with TELUS Health, sessions with our Registered Social Workers are claimable under your plan's mental health benefit, subject to your plan's specific limits.

Do you offer direct billing? No. You pay after each session and we provide a detailed RSW receipt immediately. Most clients submit through their insurer's app in under two minutes, and reimbursement typically lands within days.

What is your cancellation policy?24 hours' notice is required. The full session fee is charged for late cancellations and no-shows, because that time was held for you.
