The Ultimate Guide to Psychotherapist Costs in Ontario (2026)

Updated August 2026

Therapy cost in Ontario runs $120 to $350 per session in 2026, with most people paying $130 to $200 for a session with a registered therapist. Rates vary by designation: Registered Social Workers (RSW) charge $130 to $200, Registered Psychotherapists (RP) charge $120 to $180, and Psychologists charge $200 to $350. OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy, but most extended health plans include coverage for RSW sessions. At Inner Room, individual sessions are $170, student sessions are $130, and couples sessions are $220 for 50 minutes or $310 for 80 minutes.

Private therapy in Ontario isn’t cheap. That’s the honest truth.

The numbers above give you a starting point. What most people still want to know is what the differences between those designations actually mean for their care, and how to find out what their specific plan will cover. Those are fair questions.

What’s in this guide.

What does a psychotherapist cost in Ontario?

It depends on who you’re seeing and where. Ontario has no regulated fee schedule for private psychotherapy, so rates vary by training, designation, and practice.

A rough breakdown by designation:

  • Registered Social Workers (RSW): $130–$200 per session
  • Registered Psychotherapists (RP): $120–$180 per session
  • Psychologists (PhD/CPsych): $200–$350 per session
  • Psychiatrists: Covered by OHIP, but almost exclusively for assessment and medication — not ongoing talk therapy

At Inner Room, our current fee schedule is:

ServiceRate
Individual therapy (50 min)$170
Student rate (50 min)$130
Couples therapy (50 min)$220
Couples therapy (80 min)$310
Emotional Focused (EF) Coaching$195
Free 15-min consultation$0

No intake fees, no hidden charges.

All sessions are available as virtual therapy in Ontario — no commute, same registered therapists, same clinical depth.

What does therapy cost in Toronto?

Yes. Private therapy in Toronto typically runs toward the higher end of Ontario’s provincial ranges. Downtown Toronto psychologists commonly charge $250–$350 per session. RSW sessions in the city often sit at $150–$200.

The driver is overhead, not expertise. Office space, administrative costs, and the general cost of operating a practice in downtown Toronto get folded into session rates. Therapists with Bloor Street or Bay Street addresses charge accordingly.

Inner Room is a virtual practice. Sessions happen over secure video from wherever you are in Ontario: Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston, or Thunder Bay. Our rates are the same province-wide. $170 for individual therapy, $130 for students, $220 for couples therapy (50 minutes).

You’re not paying for a downtown address. You’re paying for the same registered therapists, the same clinical training, and the same hour of focused attention.

For anyone comparing options, virtual therapy in Ontario opens up access to a wider range of therapists and designations than your local geography alone would allow, at rates that aren’t tied to real estate costs.

Does OHIP cover therapy in Ontario?

No — not for private psychotherapy.

OHIP covers psychiatrists, but only for medication management and diagnostic assessment. Talk therapy through OHIP means going through public mental health programs: long waitlists, session limits, and not always the right clinical match.

Free options do exist. Community health centres, family health teams, and hospital-based programs offer short-term counselling through social workers at no cost — usually 6–8 sessions. They won’t work for everyone, and the wait can be significant. But they’re real, and worth knowing about if cost is the barrier.

For ongoing therapy with a consistent therapist and no waitlist, private practice is the practical route.

Is therapy covered under insurance in Ontario?

Often yes — if your benefits plan includes extended health coverage and lists social workers as a covered category.

Most extended health plans cover some or all of the cost. Wondering if your benefits plan covers it? Read our guide on therapy covered by insurance in Ontario.

This is the part most people get wrong. When you check your benefits card or call your insurer, look for “social worker” — not “psychologist” and not “psychotherapist.” Those are separate designations, and some plans cover one but not the others.

Plans that commonly cover RSW sessions include Manulife, Sun Life, GreenShield, Medavie Blue Cross, Canada Life, TELUS Health, and Desjardins. Coverage amounts vary — anywhere from $300 to $3,000 per year depending on your specific plan.

After each session at Inner Room, you receive a receipt to submit directly to your insurer. Some plans require a doctor’s referral before they’ll reimburse, so it’s worth a quick call to confirm before your first appointment.

One more thing: most extended health plans don’t cover couples therapy, or only cover one partner’s portion. Make sure to check your plan’s specific language before.

What does RSW mean?

RSW stands for Registered Social Worker.

It’s a regulated professional designation in Ontario, governed by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). Holding it means you have either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in social work plus ongoing professional accountability to a regulatory body. Our clinic focuses on working with those who hold a Master of Social Work degree to ensure there is additional training and expertise in the support our therapists provide you.

It matters for two practical reasons. First, MSW RSW sessions are more likely to be covered by extended health plans than sessions with unregulated practitioners. Second, RSWs are authorized to practice psychotherapy in Ontario — you’re getting clinical therapy, not an unregulated coaching service.

All Inner Room therapists are MSW RSWs. You can verify any therapist’s registration at ocswssw.org.

What’s the difference between a psychotherapist, a psychologist, and a registered social worker?

It’s a fair question, and it comes up a lot.

A psychologist in Ontario holds a PhD or doctorate and is regulated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. They can diagnose, administer psychological tests, and provide therapy. Their sessions typically cost more due to their specialization with psychological tests.

A registered psychotherapist (RP) is regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Their scope is specifically psychotherapy — no diagnosis, no testing.

A registered social worker (RSW) is regulated by the OCSWSSW. They can practice psychotherapy and are trained to look at both your individual experience and the systems around you — relationships, work, family, community. They can’t prescribe medication or provide formal diagnoses. What they can do is offer grounded clinical support for anxiety, burnout, relationship challenges, ADHD, and more — with a broader, systems-informed perspective.

The right fit isn’t always about designation. It’s about whether the therapist’s background matches what you’re working on.

Is there a sliding scale option?

Yes. If cost is a real barrier, reach out at info@innerroom.ca before booking. There’s no fixed published rate — this depends on each person’s financial situation, and it deserves a proper conversation.

How do people actually afford therapy?

Most people who decide therapy is out of reach haven’t actually checked what they already have. Benefits plans are dense, and most of us never read the fine print.

Extended health benefits. If you have employer coverage, your plan likely includes some amount for psychotherapy or mental health services. Call your insurer and ask specifically: “Does my plan cover Registered Social Worker (RSW) sessions, and what’s my annual limit?” Many plans provide $500–$2,000 per year. That covers a meaningful number of sessions before you pay anything out of pocket.

EFAP programs. Employee and Family Assistance Programs offer 3–8 free sessions through your employer at no cost. Many people have access to one and don’t know it. Check with your HR department before paying out of pocket.

The Medical Expense Tax Credit. Sessions with an RSW qualify as a medical expense with the CRA, claimable on your annual tax return. Over a year of regular therapy, that’s real money back.

Student rates and sliding scale. Inner Room’s student rate is $130 per session. If cost is a barrier and none of the above applies, reach out about sliding scale before you decide not to book.

Free programs. The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) program, run through Ontario Health at ontariohealth.ca, offers free CBT-based therapy for anxiety and depression through community providers. Waitlists vary by region, so it’s worth checking what’s available in your area. Community health centres and family health teams also offer free short-term counselling through social workers.

Most people who think they can’t afford therapy have more access than they realize. The first step is finding out what’s already in your plan.

Frequently asked questions

What does a psychotherapist cost in Ontario?

It depends on designation. Registered Social Workers (RSWs) typically charge $130 to $200 per session. Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) run $120 to $180. Psychologists charge $200 to $350. At Inner Room, individual sessions are $170, student rate is $130, and couples therapy starts at $220 for 50 minutes.

Is therapy tax deductible in Ontario?

Yes. Psychotherapy from a Registered Social Worker (RSW) qualifies as a medical expense under the Canada Revenue Agency’s Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC). You can claim the full cost of sessions on your annual tax return.

Can I get therapy for free in Ontario?

Yes, in some cases. OHIP-funded programs through community health centres and hospitals offer free short-term counselling, usually 6–8 sessions with a waitlist of several months. Employee and Family Assistance Programs (EFAP) may offer 3–8 free sessions. Students at Ontario universities often have access to free on-campus counselling.

How much does couples therapy cost in Ontario?

Rates vary widely. At Inner Room, couples therapy is $220 for a 50-minute session and $310 for 80 minutes. Most extended health insurance plans do not cover couples therapy — check your specific plan before booking.

Is virtual therapy cheaper than in-person?

Generally no. Session rates are based on clinical expertise and time, which are the same regardless of format. The cost saving for clients is indirect — no commute time, no transit or parking costs.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a therapist in Ontario?

Not usually. Most private practices, including Inner Room, don’t require a GP referral to book. Some extended health plans ask for a referral before reimbursing sessions, so check your plan details before your first appointment.

All Inner Room therapists are Registered Social Workers with a Master of Social Work, regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. You can verify registration at ocswssw.org.
