Virtual therapy in Ontario: real support, wherever you are

Virtual therapy in Ontario is psychotherapy delivered over secure video by a Registered Social Worker (RSW), available to anyone in the province, covered by most extended health benefit plans, with private practice rates starting at $130 per session in 2026.

At Inner Room, sessions run 50 minutes over encrypted video. Your therapist is master's-level (MSW) and registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. You can connect from Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston, Thunder Bay, or anywhere in the province with a secure internet connection. There is no app to install and no subscription to manage. A 15-minute consultation is available if you want to ask questions before you commit.

OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy. If you do not have extended health benefits, free options exist. See our guides to therapy coverage in Ontario and what psychotherapy costs for a full breakdown.

When it comes to virtual therapy in Ontario, you don't have to be in a clinic waiting room to do the inner work.

Virtual therapy in Ontario works exactly like in-person therapy. Same registered therapists, same depth, same effectiveness. The only difference is that you're in your own space. For many people, that comfort makes it easier to think clearly and get somewhere faster.

At Inner Room, all of our therapists offer virtual sessions for anyone living in Ontario. Whether you're in Toronto, a smaller city, or a rural area where local options are limited, you get the same access. No commute. No waiting room. Just a focused conversation with someone who's paying close attention.

What is virtual therapy in Ontario?

Virtual therapy in Ontario is licensed psychotherapy delivered over secure video, phone, or text with a registered therapist who meets you wherever you have a stable internet connection and privacy. It's governed by the same clinical standards as in-person therapy, and your therapist remains fully accountable to the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

Many people use virtual therapy because it removes barriers to access. You skip the commute, fit sessions around your actual schedule, and work with someone registered anywhere in Ontario rather than whoever happens to have an opening near you. The therapeutic relationship (the thing that actually drives healing) works the same way whether you're on video or sitting across a desk.

Virtual therapy has become the standard format for many practices across Ontario, and the research is clear: it works as well as in-person for anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship issues, and most other clinical concerns. The format doesn't matter. The connection does.

Therapy that fits your life, not just your location.

Skip the commute and the waiting room. Connect with a registered psychotherapist from the privacy of your own space, anywhere in Ontario.

A Canadian Practice, Not an APP

US-based therapy platforms appear prominently in Canadian search results. What they offer is different from what a registered Ontario practice offers.

With a subscription platform, you pay monthly, your therapist may rotate based on availability, and your personal health information may be stored on servers outside Canada. That puts it outside the protection of PHIPA. Receipts, if you receive them at all, may not meet the documentation requirements of Canadian benefit plans.

Inner Room is built differently. Your therapist is a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with a master's degree (MSW), registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Sessions are PHIPA-compliant. You choose your therapist from named profiles with real credentials, and you stay with that person. If your extended health plan covers RSW psychotherapy, your official receipt is valid for reimbursement.

There is no subscription. No app to install. You book a session, connect over secure video, and do the work.

That is not a minor distinction. The therapeutic relationship is the strongest predictor of whether therapy helps. Continuity with one clinician, within a regulated professional structure, is what makes that relationship possible over time.

If you want to ask questions before starting, a 15-minute consultation is available with no obligation.

Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person?

Yes. Research consistently shows online therapy outcomes match in-person therapy for anxiety, depression, burnout, and relationship work. The therapeutic relationship is what drives results, not the room.

Some people prefer face-to-face, and some situations call for it. If you're unsure what's right for you, bring it up in your consultation and we'll talk it through.

Does insurance cover virtual therapy in Ontario?

Most extended health plans cover virtual therapy with a Registered Social Worker. Coverage doesn't change based on format. Whether a session is virtual or in-person, your credential determines eligibility, not where you sit.

Plans that commonly cover RSW therapy include Sun Life, GreenShield, Medavie Blue Cross, Canada Life, TELUS Health, and Desjardins. Whether direct billing is available depends on your specific plan and provider. Coverage and billing arrangements vary. Call your provider, or reach out to us at info@innerroom.ca and we can send an estimate to your insurer. Coverage itself depends on your underlying plan.

Check your benefits booklet under "psychotherapy" or "social work" in the mental health or paramedical section. If you're unsure, call your provider and ask: "Do you cover sessions with a Registered Social Worker?" Learn more about how much therapy costs in Ontario and whether insurance covers therapy. We send a receipt after every session for reimbursement. Psychotherapy services with Registered Social Workers are exempt from HST in Ontario.

What issues can be treated with virtual therapy? Most of them. Anxiety, depression, burnout, ADHD, relationship issues, trauma, life transitions, grief, identity questions, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, couples work, and more. Virtual therapy in Ontario is as versatile as in-person therapy. If you're not sure if we work with your specific concern, ask during your consultation.

What are red flags to watch for in a therapist?A therapist who dismisses what you're saying, makes you feel judged, pushes a single approach for everything, or makes you feel worse session after session without explanation — those are worth paying attention to. Good therapy should feel challenging at times, but not unsafe. If something feels off after a few sessions, bring it up directly with your therapist. If it doesn't shift, finding someone else is completely reasonable. Inner Room therapists offer a 15-minute consultation before any commitment for exactly this reason.

What if I'm in crisis during a virtual session? Our therapists are trained to respond to crisis situations and will work with you on a safety plan. If contact is lost and there's concern for your safety, your therapist will call you directly, then your emergency contact. A wellness check may be initiated if they can't reach you.

What is the best platform for virtual therapy? The more useful question is: platform or practice?

An app that matches you to whoever is available is built for scale. A registered practice built around specific clinicians is built for you. With a practice like Inner Room, you read therapist profiles, choose the person who fits, and work with that same person over time. Your therapist knows your history. There is no algorithm between you and your care.

What makes therapy effective is not the software you use to connect. It is the quality of the therapeutic relationship, the training of the clinician, and the consistency of the work. A regulated Ontario RSW practice offers all three. An app marketplace offers availability.

Where can I find free online therapy in Canada?Ontario residents can access free CBT-based therapy for anxiety and depression through the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) program, a publicly funded initiative. Information and referral options are available at ontariohealth.ca. Waitlists vary by region.

Community health centres across Ontario also offer low-cost or sliding-scale mental health services. A quick search for community health centres in your area is a good starting point.

If you have extended health benefits, your out-of-pocket cost at a private practice is often lower than expected. Many plans cover $1,000 or more per year toward RSW psychotherapy.

OHIP does not cover private therapy. That is worth knowing upfront, but it does not mean free or affordable options are out of reach

Is there a Canadian version of BetterHelp?Yes. Registered Ontario therapy practices offer what US-based platforms do not.

With Inner Room, your therapist is a Registered Social Worker (RSW) licensed in Ontario, your personal health information is stored in Canada under PHIPA, and your session receipts are accepted by Canadian benefit plans. There is no subscription model and no app lock-in. You choose your therapist from real profiles and stay with that person.

The difference is structural. US app platforms operate under American privacy rules, use matching algorithms, and rotate therapists based on availability. A regulated Ontario practice is accountable to a professional college. Your therapist cannot be swapped out. Your data does not cross borders. Your receipts are insurance-eligible.

If you have been comparing options online and landing on US platforms, it is worth knowing that local registered practices exist, operate under stronger privacy protections, and typically cost the same or less once benefits are applied.
