How it starts

Therapy shouldn't feel like you're taking a huge risk.

Before you commit to the process, we start with a short, simple conversation. Here's what to expect with the first few steps.

01
Step one

A 15-minute consult

A short complimentary call. No pressure, no intake form marathon. Share what's on your mind. We listen. You start to feel ready to do the work.

02
Step two

Meet your therapist

We pair you with someone whose approach fits who you are and what you need — or you take the leap and choose who you want to start with.

03
Step three

Your weekly pause

Ongoing sessions at a rhythm that fits your life. A space that's yours to pause, think, and breathe, with support to work through it all.

Finding the right fit

Is Inner Room right for you?

We believe that therapy works best when the fit is exact. We're deliberate about what we do, and just as honest about what we don't so that we can co-create an authentic space for fearless experimentation. If you've worked with a therapist before and felt like the sessions were technically fine but nothing quite shifted, the problem is usually fit. Boutique practices work because the matching is carefully selected. That also means we're not the right place for everyone, and we'd rather tell you that now than two months in.

Here's how both sides look.

Strong fit

You're likely a strong fit if:

On paper, someone would say you're performing well but you know you're running on fumes.

You meet all of your obligations and are holding things together. Privately, you're beyond exhausted and it's more than just taking a 'vacation'. Your self-worth is measured by your outputs or productivity, and you've been carrying this long enough (and alone) that it feels like the norm. Sometimes you worry "is it just me? Am I being too sensitive or dramatic about this?" Christina Myshkevich knows exactly what that's like and works exclusively with this.

You're dealing with ADHD or challenges with executive functioning.

Focus issues, time blindness, the emotional weight of a suspected late diagnosis, the gap between what you know you're capable of and what you can actually get done in a given day, and the sheer tiredness from masking it for everyone else. You want strategies that work with how your brain actually functions, not advice to 'just try harder.' Mo Alharoun specializes in ADHD and neurodivergence, and no formal diagnosis is required to start.

You're stuck in perfectionism, overthinking, or repeating patterns in your relationships.

You can name the thing you keep doing. You've probably explained it to your whole group of trusted advisors, and you understand it - intellectually. Yet, it keeps happening. Vivian Zhang works with exactly this: the anxiety that lives underneath performance, the relational loops that just keep happening, and the type of stress that you can't seem to put a name to which has you doubting yourself and your decisions.

You're carrying trauma, grief, or a major life transition that hasn't fully settled.

Talk-based approaches have helped to a point, but something isn't fully landing. Or you're in a period of reproductive change. The ground has shifted more than you expected. Shawna Martin brings 30 years of clinical experience and a body-informed approach to trauma, grief, and women's health.

You're an Ontario resident who wants consistent virtual care, without a waitlist.

All Inner Room therapists work virtually with residents across Ontario, Canada. No commute, no waitlist, weekly sessions from the comforts of your own safe and secure space.

Honest check

This probably isn't the right fit if:

You're in crisis right now.

Inner Room is a scheduled outpatient practice. We do not have 24/7 crisis coverage and we are not a substitute for emergency care. If you're experiencing active suicidal thoughts, self-harm urges, or a mental health emergency, we want you to be safe. Reach out to:

  • 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline: call or text 9-8-8, toll-free, 24/7 across Canada
  • ConnexOntario: 1-866-531-2600 for 24/7 support anywhere in Ontario
  • Or go to your nearest hospital emergency department

Once you're in a more stable place, we'd be glad to talk about whether ongoing therapy with us makes sense.

You need a formal diagnostic assessment or prescription management.

Inner Room therapists are Registered Social Workers. We provide psychotherapy, not diagnoses or prescriptions. If you need an official neuropsychological report or medication management, you'll need a registered psychologist or psychiatrist.

You need specialized medical care for severe active symptoms.

Active eating disorders, unmanaged psychosis, or severe substance dependence typically require multidisciplinary medical teams, intensive outpatient programs, hospital-based services, or a specialist in these areas.

You've been referred for court-mandated therapy or a legal assessment.

We don't conduct custody evaluations, forensic assessments, or court-mandated reports.

You want to meet with a therapist in-person.

Inner Room is a fully virtual practice. If you prefer meeting in a physical office, the Psychology Today Ontario therapist directory is a good place to find care near you.

If you're on the fence about therapy, let us know.

The consultation is 15-minutes with any of our therapists. If we're the right fit, you'll know or we'll point you in the direction for a better fit.

Common Questions

Is therapy covered by insurance in Ontario?OHIP does not cover psychotherapy. However, most extended health benefit plans (through employers or personal coverage) do cover sessions with a Registered Social Worker. Check your plan under "social work" or "psychotherapy." After each session, we provide an official RSW receipt you can submit directly to your insurer for reimbursement. Read the full breakdown of what's covered.

Do I need a referral to start? No. You do not need a doctor's referral to work with one of our therapists. You can book a consultation directly through our website and typically get started within days.

Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person?Research consistently shows that virtual therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns, including anxiety, depression, burnout, and relationship challenges. Many clients find the flexibility and privacy of virtual sessions actually enhances the work. How virtual therapy works in Ontario.

What happens in the consultation? It's a 15-minute call with one of our therapists. You'll share what's going on, and they'll explain how Inner Room works. If it seems like a good fit, they'll match you with the right therapist on the team and help schedule your first session. If we're not the right fit, they'll say so — and point you somewhere that is.

How do I know which therapist is right for me?That's exactly what the consultation is for. Our therapists get to know your situation and make a thoughtful match based on your needs, their specializations, style, and availability. You don't have to figure this part out alone. Meet the team.

How soon can I start? Most clients have their first session within a week of their initial consultation. There is no formal waitlist. Book a consultation and we'll take it from there.

How much does therapy cost in Ontario?Across Ontario, individual sessions typically range from $150 to $240. At Inner Room, individual therapy is $170–195, couples therapy starts at $220, and student sessions are $130. The full cost breakdown.

Where in Ontario do you provide virtual therapy?Because Inner Room is a fully virtual practice, we provide secure online psychotherapy to residents across all of Ontario. This means you skip the commute and local waitlists. We frequently support clients logging in from Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Markham, Vaughan, Oakville, and Barrie. Whether you live in a major metro or a rural community, as long as you have a private space and internet connection, you can access expert care from anywhere in the province.

How do I know if therapy is working? It's usually quieter than people expect. Your triggers feel more recognizable. You pause before reacting. The things that used to spiral you start to feel more manageable. Progress tends to show up between sessions, not just in them. The signs to look for.

Is there free therapy in Ontario?Yes, through OHIP-funded community health centres, hospital programs, and some employer assistance plans. The tradeoff is usually waitlists of 3 to 6 months and limits on how many sessions you get. If you need support sooner, a consultation can help you figure out your options.

What are red flags in a therapist?A therapist who talks mostly about themselves, guarantees outcomes, or doesn't seem curious about you as an individual. If something feels off, it usually is. That's why we start with a consultation. You get to feel out the fit before committing to anything.
